Starling at Big Lake in NW Edmonton is an incredible place to live, don’t believe us? Listen to the stories of a couple of Starling residents:

Starr O’Loughlin

Starling at Big Lake Home Testimonial

“We have had the pleasure of living in Starling for the past year and love it. The neighbourhood is well designed and the convenience to both city amenities and the tranquility of nature is incredible. It takes 20 minutes to get to downtown Edmonton, and minutes to your choice of shopping. Even with the convenience of amenities, you are never far from nature. The neighbourhood itself has great walking trails (which my boys both get to safely practice their biking skills), ponds and trees.

Since living here we have seen beavers, rabbits, deer, owls, geese, and ducks all within our neighbourhood! If this wasn’t incredible enough, you are within walking distance to the Louis Hole Provincial Park with a whole forest to explore. I love being able to teach my boys about nature without having to travel. I love that the other people who live here are friendly and that we look out for one another – it really does have a small town feel. We have made some great friends here and look forward to watching the next stage of Starling develop. I am truly very happy with our decision to move here.”

What were the most important attributes you were looking for in your new community, and how did Starling satisfy them?

“Bike paths for the kids, easy access to downtown Edmonton. Close to the kid’s school and daycare.”

What are you looking forward to the most about your next few years in Starling?

“We’re looking forward to growth ‐ meeting new families, watching trees grow, and establishing a community. Our children have enjoyed getting to know other kids in the neighbourhood, something we didn’t have in our  previous home.”

Joel Kleine

Starling at Big Lake Home Testimonial

“Our move to Starling was not one by choice. Our family needed a new home to accommodate my changing needs. 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). The effects of FA have put me in a wheelchair and drastically changed my life as well as my family’s. We looked at various options and building a new barrier-free home clearly became the best one. My wife was hesitant to move, but then one day we pulled up to the spot that would eventually become our home backing on to a pond and a ravine lush with trees. At that moment, she knew this was the place for our family.

Here, we have a home where I no longer have to worry about falling, or stairs, or being unable to accomplish simple everyday tasks. Our young boys, aged 7 and 10, enjoy watching the wildlife from the dining table. This is a new start for them too, as the neighborhood grows and new families move in, it’s a privilege to greet strangers, now neighbours and future friends. Starling has been a gift to our family, and we look forward to being a part of this developing community.”

What set Starling at Big Lake above the other communities that you looked at?

“The location and the focus on nature. We wanted space, but still needed to be in the city, so having a pond and ravine in our backyard helps us to feel like we’ve got that space here. Many other communities we looked at felt crowded. Due to my disability, vacations aren’t a regular reality for our family, so this way, every day we get to see amazing and beautiful things right outside our windows.”
